Review: Tracy Anderson's 30 Day Method

Tracy Anderson's 30 Day Method
The Weight-Loss Kick-Start that Makes Perfection Possible
By Tracy Anderson
isbn: 9780446562041
pub date: 9/20/2010

Description:

Did you know muscles get bored, just like people do? And did you also know that there's a 9 out of 10 chance that you're working the wrong muscles when you exercise? With TRACY ANDERSON'S 30-DAY METHOD you don't have to worry--her unique workout will help you drop the weight and shrink your body in just 30 days.

Based on ten years of scientific research and experience getting not just herself, but A-list stars and everyday people, red carpet ready, Anderson has developed a unique 30-day diet and workout routine that reshapes the body and defies genetics to tone the muscles and drop the pounds. While most people incorrectly target their major muscle groups, like the bicep or hamstring, the focus should be on the smaller accessory muscles that can create a long, lean, balanced look--instead of bulked up look. Anderson's program is composed of a groundbreaking three-tiered approach, including a mat workout and cardio routine targeting the all-important accessory muscles, and an exclusive 30-day meal plan, complete with dozens of delicious recipes.

This comprehensive kick-start program is unlike any other workout on the market and it leaves no chance for anything but terrific, fast results!

My Review: As much as I would love to look like the cover photo of this book, unfortunately I don't think it's going to happen. Not by following Tracy Anderson's plan at least. It's not that I think there is anything wrong with it, but it just isn't something that will work for me. The 30 day method requires you to commit to three things: the Muscle Design Work, The Cardio Compliment, and an eating plan.

To begin with I do think you would need to start out with a good level of body strength, stamina, and flexibility because some of the exercises that are given look like they would be quite hard and tiring. Yes, some of the exercises are things that the majority of us could probably pull off, but others look downright scary and I wouldn't dare try them. (examples in photos)

The deal breaker for me was the 30 day meal plan, which I initially thought was 100% vegetarian. *I realize now that there are in fact two meal plans; one vegetarian plan, and one "regular" plan. Both plans include Breakfast, Lunch, Snack, and Dinner along with the page numbers for the corresponding recipes. The majority of the meat in the regular plan consists of chicken, turkey, and fish although steak and lamb both make a lone appearance on days 14 and 16. These menus are meant to help boost your metabolism while eating a healthy, balanced diet.

If you think you would be able to follow a strict and rigorous 30 day plan, and are serious about getting into shape Tracy Anderson's book will surely make a difference. She does go into a lot of detail on the benefits and step by step directions of each routine including tips for beginners. The photos and companion DVD are very helpful as well.

If I ever manage to muster the will power (and cash) to follow the 30 day menu, and the bravery to get into the positions shown in my photos I will definitely give it more of a fair chance.

*Review has been edited since I originally stated that the meal plan was 100% vegetarian, sorry about that and thanks for reading!

Holiday Gift Guide Review - Clinton Street Baking Company Cookbook

Clinton Street Baking Company Cookbook
by Neil Kleinberg
isbn: 9780316083379
pub date: 11/8/2010

Description:
The Clinton St. Baking Company is one of the hottest brunch spots in a city obsessed with brunch. A tiny thirty-two-seat eatery on Manhattan's trendy Lower East Side, the restaurant draws long lines of customers who come from far and wide to sample fresh-baked goods, hearty omelets, sugar-cured bacon, and light-as-air pancakes with maple butter.
In the Clinton St. Baking Company Cookbook, owners DeDe Lahman and Neil Kleinberg share more than 100 treasured recipes that have made their restaurant a sensation. Learn the secret to their house-made buttermilk biscuits and tomato jam, irresistible muffins and scones, delicious soups and sandwiches, and their decadent, eye-catching desserts. Helpful techniques, like Neil's patented omelet "flip and tuck," and gorgeous color photographs throughout will have readers cooking like pros in no time, and sharing the delicious results.
My Review: I have to say, I have looked over a lot of recipes either online or in books and this book contains some of the most delicious looking photos of food that I have ever seen! I made a not so short list of ingredients which I will need to buy for the recipes that I picked out and my plan was to share some of my own photos but unfortunately it did not turn out that way. I haven't had the chance to bake anything from this book as of yet due to not having the ingredients, but when I do I'll be sure to share! Not only do the recipes and photos in the book look absolutely divine, but there are also plenty of useful tips for those of us who aren't so great in the kitchen - like the secret to making the perfect omelet! No, I won't share - you will need to buy the book to find out! This book would be the perfect gift for anyone who likes to bake, or wants to learn some fantastic new recipes.

Holiday Gift Guide Review - Simple Times

Simple Times: Crafts For Poor People
by Amy Sedaris
isbn: 9780446557030
pub date: 11/02/2010

Description:
America's most delightfully unconventional hostess and the bestselling author of I Like You delivers a new book that will forever change the world of crafting. According to Amy Sedaris, it's often been said that ugly people craft and attractive people have sex. In her new book, SIMPLE TIMES, she sets the record straight. Demonstrating that crafting is one of life's more pleasurable and constructive leisure activities, Sedaris shows that anyone with a couple of hours to kill and access to pipe cleaners can join the elite society of crafters.
You will discover how to make popular crafts, such as: crab-claw roach clips, tinfoil balls, and crepe-paper moccasins, and learn how to: get inspired (Spend time at a Renaissance Fair; Buy fruit, let it get old, and see
what shapes it turns into); remember which kind of glue to use with which material (Tacky with Furry, Gummy with Gritty, Paste with Prickly, and always Gloppy with Sandy); create your own craft room and avoid the most common crafting accidents (sawdust fires, feather asphyxia, pine cone lodged in throat); and cook your own edible crafts, from a Crafty Candle Salad to Sugar Skulls, and many more recipes.
PLUS whole chapters full of more crafting ideas (Pompom Ringworms! Seashell Toilet Seat Covers!) that will inspire you to create your own hastily constructed obscure d'arts; and much, much more!
My Review:  When I received this book, I had no clue what to expect as I had no clue who Amy Sedaris was! I was surprised to find that the content of the book was not the typical family crafting time crafts and was laughing hysterically after flipping through the pages for a short time. If you are easily offended by things like nude drawings, this book won't be for you, but if you enjoy a good laugh this book is a definite must. It might even give you a few ideas to pass on to the kids - but I wouldn't recommend letting them read this book. While this book is full of crafty things you can make out of recycled materials, I enjoyed it much more for the humor that runs throughout than the actual craft instructions. A new favorite on my shelf!

Review: Don't Blink by James Patterson

by James Patterson & Howard Roughan
isbn: 9780316036238
Pub. Date 9/27/2010

Description:
The good

New York's Lombardo's Steak House is famous for three reasons--the menu, the clientele, and now, the gruesome murder of an infamous mob lawyer. Effortlessly, the assassin slips through the police's fingers, and his absence sparks a blaze of accusations about who ordered the hit.

The bad

Seated at a nearby table, reporter Nick Daniels is conducting a once-in-a-lifetime interview with a legendary baseball bad-boy. In the chaos, he accidentally captures a key piece of evidence that lands him in the middle of an all-out war between Italian and Russian mafia forces. NYPD captains, district attorneys, mayoral candidates, media kingpins, and one shockingly beautiful magazine editor are all pushing their own agendas--on both sides of the law.

And the dead

Back off--or die--is the clear message Nick receives as he investigates for a story of his own. Heedless, and perhaps in love with his beautiful editor, Nick endures humiliation, threats, violence, and worse in a thriller that overturns every expectation and finishes with the kind of flourish only James Patterson knows.
My Review: I gave this one to my Mom to read, and she told me it was fast paced and graphic like James Patterson's other novels and she thought it was good; but not as good as the others. I wish she could have given me more than that as a review so I did take a quick look through myself. It looks like this one will be more my style than hers, and am looking forward to reading the entire book. Take a look at the widget below for a sneak peek so you can decide for yourself if this crime thriller is for you!

The Postcard Killers {Audiobook} Review & Giveaway

by James Patterson & Liza Marklund
Read by Katherine Kellgren, Eric Singer, and Reg Rogers
isbn: 9781607883821
Pub. Date: 8/16/2010

Description: NYPD detective Jack Kanon is on a tour of Europe's most gorgeous cities. But the sights aren't what draw him--he sees each museum, each cathedral, and each restaurant through a killer's eyes.

Kanon's daughter, Kimmy, and her boyfriend were murdered while on vacation in Rome. Since then, young couples in Paris, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, and Stockholm have become victims of the same sadistic killers. Now Kanon teams up with the Swedish reporter, Dessie Larsson. Every killing is preceded by a postcard to the local newspaper--and Kanon and Larsson think they know where the next victims will be. With relentless logic and unstoppable action, THE POSTCARD KILLERS may be James Patterson's most vivid and compelling thriller yet.

My Review: While this isn't a title I would recommend for the easily offended, if you enjoy graphic crime scenes, explicit sex, and don't mind some profanity I would gladly point you towards The Postcard Killers as I find the three to be imperative to an excellent crime thriller. A fast based story from the get go and well read by three different narrators this one was worth the listen. It is 7.5 hours long, and even though I could have listened while I was busy doing other things this one took me a while to get through because I wanted to hear every detail without distraction. It didn't quite turn out that way for me since I usually have so many things to do, but like I said - It was worth it!

{Cool for School} Ah-Choo! The Uncommon Life of Your Common Cold

isbn: 9780446541152
Pub. Date: 9/2/2010

Descripion: Some colds are like mice, timid and annoying; others like dragons, accompanied by body aches and deep misery. In AH-CHOO!, Jennifer Ackerman explains what, exactly, a cold is, how it works, and whether it's really possible to "fight one off." Scientists call this the Golden Age of the Common Cold because Americans suffer up to a billion colds each year, resulting in 40 million days of missed work and school and 100 million doctor visits. They've also learned over the past decade much more about what cold viruses are, what they do to the human body, and how symptoms can be addressed. In this ode to the odious cold, Ackerman sifts through the chatter about treatments-what works, what doesn't, and what can't hurt. She dispels myths, such as susceptibility to colds reflects a weakened immune system. And she tracks current research, including work at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, a world-renowned center of cold research studies, where the search for a cure continues.

Kids are constantly coming home with a cold from school throughout the year and every bit of relief is always welcomed. This book covers everything from catching a cold to killing it, including tips on avoiding colds and remedies to ease your suffering. Did you know that we spend an average of five years of our lives suffering from a cold -and roughly a full year sick in bed- with congestion, coughing, headache, and sore throat? Of course not all remedies work for everyone, and colds can go away on their own but I know I will try anything when I can't breath or sleep because of a cold! If you would like to learn more about, then Ah-Choo! may be the book for you.

{Cool for School} The Glamour of Grammar: A Guide To The Magic And Mystery Of Practical English

by Roy Peter Clark
isbn 9780316027915
Pub. Date 8/16/10

Description: Early in the history of English, the words "grammar" and "glamour" meant the same thing: the power to charm. Roy Peter Clark, author of Writing Tools, aims to put the glamour back in grammar with this fun, engaging alternative to stuffy instructionals. In this practical guide, readers will learn everything from the different parts of speech to why effective writers prefer concrete nouns and active verbs. THE GLAMOUR OF GRAMMAR gives readers all the tools they need to"live inside the language"--to take advantage of grammar to perfect their use of English, to instill meaning, and to charm through their writing. With this indispensable book, readers will come to see just how glamorous grammar can be.

When I saw this book, I wasn't sure if I would like it but went ahead and requested it for review anyway since I thought it would fit in nicely with my Cool for School reviews. I was pleasantly surprised to find that The Glamour of Grammar was a very quick, and interesting read. Each chapter tackles a different grammar or writing subject, along with examples and highlights to guide you through. I didn't feel the urge to let my mind wander into a daydream like I did in High School English class, and I think this book would be a useful addition for anyone struggling with, or simply wanting to improve their writing skills. I will admit that I did skip through some chapters in order to speed up my review, but can see myself going back to this book whenever I am not sure if I am using the proper punctuation or meaning in my writing.

The Island ~ Audiobook Review and Giveaway!

isbn 978-1607882404
Read by Denice Hicks
Pub. Date 7/6/10

Description: Birdie Cousins has planned a getaway with her daughter Chess on rustic, charming Tuckernuck Island off the coast of Nantucket, a chance to bond before Chess's upcoming marriage. Birdie's been through a difficult divorce herself, so she knows the big commitment that marriage entails. She's only recently dared to tiptoe back into the waters of romance.

When Chess abruptly breaks off the wedding and her fiancé shockingly dies in a rock climbing accident, it leaves Chess feeling guilty and deeply depressed. Birdie circles the wagons, convincing her younger daughter Tate, and her own sister India to join them on Tuckernuck for the month of July. Secrets and intrigue soon make their way to the surface, as Elin Hilderbrand once again weaves a masterful story of summer suspense.

As much as I love reading, I don't get to do it as often as I would like and it takes me a long time to finish an entire book. This Audio book is 15 hours long, but since I was able to have it on while I was doing other things it was so much easier for me to get through it. I found it to be a nice calm story to listen to while doing my evening tidy up around the house and even while cooking dinner or just relaxing. I fell asleep to it a few times, which was a bit of a pain to try finding my place but that was my own fault! The story had a nice feel for family bonding and even though I normally prefer fantasy or thrillers I found myself enjoying The Island and itching to know what would happen next.

{Fathers Day Gift Ideas} ~ The Knight Life ~ Book Review & Giveaway ~ 2 Winners!

Info From Hachette:
The Knight Life is a hilariously twisted view of life through the eyes and pen of its creator, community-oriented urban hipster and award-winning cartoonist Keith Knight. The Knight Life deftly blends political insight and neurotic humor in a uniquely fluid and dynamic style, offering a comic strip that's fresh, sharp, topical and funny. Designed for daily newspapers, The Knight Life follows Knight's long-running, 2007 Harvey Award-winning weekly comic strip "The K Chronicles," which appears on salon.com.

An unabashedly provocative political and social satire, The Knight Life tackles contemporary issues like consumer culture, bacon, the media, race, family and everything else, gently mocking the minutiae of daily life with self-deprecating humor, honesty and goofiness-a combination that's perfect for the comics. And The Knight Life's energetic style reminds readers that comics can look funny as well as read funny. The result is accessible yet edgy, compassionate and political-and never preachy. Cartoonist and comic historian R.C. Harvey said, "The Knight Life is undeniably the best new laugh- and thought-provoker on the comics page. Not since Calvin and Hobbes has there been so novel an entertainment in the funnies."

My Review:
I did not read this book myself yet, but my son and my husband both read it. It took my son two evenings, and my husband around 2 hours to finish the book. My husband said, rather than reading it from cover to cover he would have preferred to have read it slowly as casual reading on a lazy day. It did have some great illustrations, but there was quite a bit of the humor that we didn't understand since we are Canadian and some of it was targeted at American politics. There is nothing that is overly racial or inappropriate and the book was good for some laughs throughout.

If you are looking for something a little different than the average comic, then The Knight Life might be for you! It may be a great Fathers Day or anytime gift for the comic lover in your life.Personally, I think my Dad would have loved this book. He collected comics, and had a huge stack of newspaper comics saved up - several years worth! I don't think there ever was a comic that he didn't like..
