{Cool for School} Fellowes P-8C Paper Shredder

I have never owned a paper shredder before now, but the amount of information I have simply thrown away in the past is quite scary now that I think about it. I started cutting things up with scissors, but if you have done that before you probably know it isn't fun to do! I got to the point where I just started saving everything that had my information on it, which meant I had piles of paper taking up space around my house that I was afraid to throw away. For those going to university or college it is just as important to be able to safely dispose of these papers.

The P-8C paper shredder by Fellowes is about 9" deep, 13.5" tall, and 14" wide so it does take up a little space but it is worth it! I really put it to the test with everything from single sheets of paper to expired credit cards. It can shred up to 8 pieces of paper at a time and cross-cuts the sheets into approximately 309 particles per sheet! It can even cut through paper clips and staples without jamming. I went a little shredder happy and filled the tub with shredded papers in a couple days, but I think it would take much longer than that if you don't already have stacks of paper sitting around waiting to be sliced to bits. I didn't count how many it was in total, but it was several months worth of bills and other miscellaneous things.

One nice feature is that the P8-C shredder has a patented Safety Lock which disables the shredder and an on/off switch hidden in the back for even more precaution for those of us with little ones in the house. The lock is easy to use with a push-slide motion, but possibly a little too easy as my 10 year old figured it out without a problem. Because of that I am happy to have the hidden on/off switch since he hasn't discovered that, yet. There is a little slot on top of the safety lock that you can use to guage sheet capacity but if you happen to jam the machine, there is a reverse button to help get the jammed paper or object out.

An indicator light at the front of the machine glows green to let you know it is in Auto-On mode where it will start shredding as soon as paper is detected in the slot. If the machine overheats, another light glows red. The shredder can be used continuously for 3-5 minutes after which a cool down period of 15 minutes is automatically triggered. Even with all the shredding that I did, it did not overheated nor get jammed. I was going back and forth finding various papers from different rooms of the house so in all I probably did not use it long enough in one block to cause a problem.

Something I didn't know was that all cross-cut shredders require oil for peak performance. If not oiled, a machine may experience diminished sheet capacity, intrusive noise when shredding and could ultimately stop running. To avoid these problems, Fellowes recommends you oil your shredder each time you empty your waste bin using only a non-aerosol vegetable oil in long nozzle container such as Fellowes 35250.
