Holiday Gift Guide - Masterlock Speed Dial

I had the chance to review and giveaway one of the new Master Lock Speed Dial padlocks back in August, and I'm excited to let you all know that Master Lock recently received the 2010 Chicago Innovation Award as detailed in the press release from November 9th below. To to celebrate this achievement, they have given me another Speed Dial to offer to one of my readers!
MASTER LOCK RECEIVES 2010 CHICAGO INNOVATION AWARD
Security Industry Leader Honored for Game-Changing Speed Dial Set-Your-Own Combination Lock

MILWAUKEE, November 9, 2010 – Master Lock was recognized at the ninth annual Chicago Innovation Awards last week for forever altering the way combination locks function with its 1500iD Speed Dial Set-Your-Own Combination Lock and the lock’s first-of-its-kind directional combination system.

The Master Lock Speed Dial and nine other products were chosen as winners from more than 332 nominees representing the Chicago region’s most innovative new products and services brought to market throughout the past year. Judges evaluated each entry on its success as a new product, the service it provides and its ability to uniquely satisfy unmet needs in the marketplace.

“We’re thrilled to have been honored for this innovation, which has proven to be one of the most successful new product launches that we’ve had in years,” said Rebecca Smith, vice president, marketing for Master Lock. “Consumers can continue to expect more distinctive security products to meet their unique needs from Master Lock in the future.”

The revolutionary Speed Dial features technology that won’t be found in any other padlock. It is the world’s first combination lock that opens on up, down, left and right directional movements making it faster, easier and more secure than rotary dial combination locks. The lock is faster to open than traditional locks, saving users valuable time as they hurry to and from class or their workouts at the gym. The innovative lock is customizable, allowing users to create their own easy-to-remember, resettable combination with any number of movements in any sequence. For those who prefer more traditional methods of recalling their combination, the lock includes adhesive letters, numbers, colors, shapes and symbols that can be applied over the lock’s directional arrows. It also offers a helpful solution for people who are visually impaired, as users don’t need to see the dial to open it.

The 1500iD Speed Dial Set-Your-Own Combination Lock is available at retailers and e-tailers nationwide, with a suggested retail price of $8.99. More information can be found here.

Never forget your password again!

If you are like me, you likely have many accounts on many different webpages. How many times have you forgotten a password or log in info? I know I have done it many times, I am especially bad for it when a site requires me to use a password containing numbers or a combination of capital and lowercase letters.

Master Lock has come up with a way to make sure we never forget those passwords again with Master Lock Vault. I don't have a smartphone (or any phone) to use with Master Lock Vault, but I have been adding my information to the site for the last couple of weeks so I could check it out. The site and app are completely free and extremely easy to use.

I hope some of you will check out the website and press release below!

MASTER LOCK LAUNCHES FREE MOBILE APP, WEBSITE,
FOR SECURE PASSWORD AND DATA STORAGE
Master Lock Vault Allows Users to Access Any Password, Anytime, Anywhere
and Reduces Risk of Identity Theft
MILWAUKEE, October 5, 2010 – From PIN codes and key codes, to passwords and lock combinations, most people are on password overload. Over time, these passwords and codes have evolved from simple 4-digit PIN numbers to complex combinations requiring letters, numbers and symbols. People are forced to choose between ones that are easy to hack or easy to forget. Thanks to the new Master Lock Vault, consumers can now store and retrieve all of their confidential access information in one free, safe and convenient location; no matter how complicated a combination may be, it will never be lost or forgotten again.

With the Master Lock Vault, consumers only need to remember one unique password and username that they create on www.masterlockvault.com. In addition, smart phone users will find a mobile version available at the same address. Those with Apple devices such as the iPhone™, iPad™ or iTouch™ can download the free Master Lock Vault app from the App Store for instant access to stored information anytime, anywhere. Users simply set up an account, then can review, add, change and delete stored information quickly, easily and safely from any computer or smart phone.

“We are becoming a more security-conscious society surrounded by passwords, and it’s not easy to remember them all, much less store them safely,” said Rebecca Smith, vice president, marketing for Master Lock. “As a leader in off-line security solutions, it’s only natural that we take our expertise online and provide consumers with the safest method to store and retrieve passwords and combinations in a secure environment from a brand they trust.”

The Master Lock Vault provides the highest level of website security available today – a 256bit encrypted connection – for safe storage of users’ security sensitive information. As a result, the Master Lock Vault is safer than storing information offline where it could be discovered, leaving you at risk for identity theft. A green bar and padlock symbol in users’ browsers alerts them to the fact that they’re on the secure site. Information stored in the Master Lock Vault cannot be accessed by Master Lock, and Master Lock does not share users’ information with anyone, ever.

For additional protection with safeguarding your information, Master Lock encourages you to:
o Never use the same password for multiple accounts
o Never write down your password in a public place, such as in a Rolodex or on a sticky note on your computer monitor
o Never create passwords that are easy to crack, such as
o Default passwords (guest, admin)
o Dictionary words (rabbit, Packers)
o Words with numbers appended (password1)
o Words with simple obfuscation (p@ssw0rd)
o Double words (fishfish)
o Common keyboard sequences (qwerty)
o Common numeric sequences (911)
o Identifiers (555-1234, 01/12/1965)
o Anything personally related to you (license plate number, birthday)

{Cool for School} Masterlock

About the Products:

The revolutionary Speed Dial Set-Your-Own Combination Lock from Masterlock features a first-of-its-kind design that opens on directional movements – up, down, left and right – instead of a standard rotary dial. The lock is faster to open than traditional locks, saving students valuable time as they hurry to and from classes. This innovative lock is customizable, allowing students to create their own easy-to-remember, re-settable combination with any number of movements in any sequence. For those who prefer more traditional methods of recalling their combination, the lock includes adhesive letters, numbers, colors, shapes and symbols that can be applied over the lock’s direction arrows. This creative lock offers a helpful solution for visually impaired students, as users don’t need to see the dial to open it.

For those who are more comfortable with a traditional padlock, the
Precision Dial Set-Your-Own Combination Lock from Master Lock features a standard rotary dial. However, you can leave memorization for the history books as you choose your own combination for this unique lock using three letters or numbers. The lock operates with a traditional right-left-right movement, and an included reset tool ensures you will never forget the combination again.

Like every great school accessory, these locks are available in an array of vibrant colors: the Speed Dial is available in red, blue, black with chrome, and black with green, and the Precision Dial is available in pink, black, blue and green. Both locks feature anti-shim technology making them more secure than traditional locks.

For an extra measure of security and convenience, students can visit
www.combolocker.com. Combolocker allows lock users to store multiple combinations or key numbers in a secure database that can be accessed 24/7, 365 days a year.

From locker security to Facebook privacy, Master Lock is also offering a solution for locking up secrets online with the “Master Lock Secret Vault” Facebook application. Facebook users with a juicy tidbit or fun photo they want to share with a select group - but not their entire friends list - can install the application on
Facebook, lock up their secrets in their own Secret Vault using a virtual Speed Dial Set-Your-Own Combination Lock, and create a custom combination to share with only a select group of friends.

The 1500iD Speed Dial Set-Your-Own Combination Lock and 1590D Precision Dial Set-Your-Own Combination Lock are available at retailers nationwide, with suggested retail prices of $8.99 and $7.99. Both locks are also available online from
Amazon.

I received one of each of these fantastic locks for review, and not only are they made of the same high quality we have grown to expect from Masterlock, they are functional, fashionable, and easy to use! My son is going to be starting Grade 5 this year and it will be his first year getting a locker so I have been letting him practice and get used to using the Speed Dial lock. Since he has not used a padlock before the first thing he asked me when I offered him both locks is "Which one is easier?". His name has 5 letters, so I used tweezers to attach the included letter sticker indicators and set the combination to spell his name. I handed him the lock, told him what the combination was and he was able to open it on his first try. Looks like it passed the easy test! He actually thinks it is too easy, and wants me to change it to something that others won't guess. I told him we could do that if he wanted, or once he remembers the combination we could remove the stickers so that no one will be able to guess. The stickers that are included each have 3 letters, but if you wanted single letters I'm sure you could find other, similar sized stickers that would work.
